How to Use a Chain Saw
Poulan chain saws are easy to use, but as with all power tools, if operated incorrectly, they can be dangerous. We at OrderTree would like to offer some helpful tips on how to use a chain saw the proper way. If you are using the bottom bar of the chain saw, the chain may have a tendency to pull you into your work. If you are using the top bar, then you may be pushed away from whatever you are cutting. When using a chain saw it is common to experience a kickback. Most kickbacks are easy to control, but a severe kickback can cause some pretty terrible accidents. Kickbacks occur when the tool is suddenly thrown back towards the user. Kickbacks happen when you are removing limbs from a tree that are on the ground or while cutting the trunk of a tree. Kickbacks also occur when the chain is suddenly forced to stop. The most common reason for this is when the upper tip of the bar touches a branch or tree, or when a limb of a tree pinches the top of the bar and chain while cutting below with the top bar.
To prevent kickbacks, take the following steps:
- Hold the chainsaw with both hands
- Keep your elbow locked tight
- Never cut above shoulder height
- Keep the chainsaw close to your body
- Use a saw with a chain brake
- Start every cut under full throttle
- Keep the chainsaw sharp
