Buying a Lawn Mower FAQ
What Types of Mowers Can I Get?
There are two types of mowers you can get. You can either buy a reel mower or a rotary mower. Reel mowers cut with spinning blades passing over a fixed blade. Also, since they don’t use an engine, they tend to be on the quiet side. Reel mowers are great for softer grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, Zoysia, Ryegrass, Bent grass, and Centipede grass. Rotary mowers cut with a circulating blade underneath a sturdy housing of metal, fiberglass, or plastic. These mowers are loud, so if you are friendly with your neighbors, avoid using this mower until later in the day.
Do I Get a Gas or Electric Mower?
Electric mowers are not noisy and won’t pollute the air as much as gas mowers will. Electric mowers require a cord, usually 100 feet in length. Cordless mowers are also an option, but if you use a coreless mower, make sure you check its battery before using it. You want to make sure the battery will last through at least one mowing.
What’s the Difference Between a Push Mower and a Self-Propelled Mower?
A push mower is ideal for those who do not have a lot of lawn that needs to be mowed. Push mowers are great for those who have less than an acre to take care of. These mowers can get heavy and may require some extra effort. Self-propelled mowers are great if you have a larger lawn. These mowers move on their own power so pushing them will be a breeze.
What is a Mulching Mower?
Mulching mowers allow you to not have to worry about having bags of clippings after you are done mowing your lawn. This mower cuts your grass, but then blows the clippings back onto the lawn, turning them into fertile compost.
